Alumni – Michaela Penix
2013 Graduate
Michaela Penix, 39, of Cumberland County, is the North Carolina Director for Maternal and Infant Health for the March of Dimes and an Adjunct Professor at North Carolina Central University. She was nominated for 40 Under 40 because she “has won two awards recognizing her dynamic work in public health,” a nominator writes. “One award, the Partner in Prevention, was given recently to commend the advocacy work that she supported in getting legislation passed to automatically update newborn screening requirements with the federal recommendations. The second award, the Superhero Award, given by the Women and Children’s Health section of the North Carolina Public Health Association, highlighted her work in supporting the Cumberland County Health Department’s Baby Store. In addition to the baby store, she was instrumental in the development of a prenatal group care program and coordinates a statewide diaper and wipes distribution program via 130 baby showers. Michaela is a fierce advocate for children and reproductive justice as well. She always finds ways to connect and desires the best for all who she interacts with. She is most deserving to be recognized for the work that she does in Cumberland County and throughout the state of North Carolina.”
